“Perhaps you are searching among the branches for what can only be found at the roots.” – Rumi
Kiss the Ground is a compilation of songs inspired by the poetry of Islamic Sufi poets, Rumi and Hafiz; a few Wisdom books of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible), Job, Ecclesiastes and Psalms; Egyptian Wisdom Prose from over 3000 years ago; Native American myth and wisdom from my own experience of working among the homeless in the Christian tradition as a pastor. I was inspired to discover what all of these religious and spiritual traditions might share at the root: namely, Wisdom.
Wisdom is a tradition found in many religions and spiritual practices that explores themes of love, meaning, human suffering, loneliness, joy, and the relationship between people and creation, just to name a few themes. Wisdom is commonly considered to be of feminine origin.
Wisdom literature appears in many religious and spiritual traditions all over the world. In Proverbs chapter 8, another Wisdom book, it is Woman Wisdom who co-creates the world with God. Another beautiful little nugget I discovered in my Wisdom search, the feminine qualities of this creative tradition.
I found traditions of Wisdom within Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Egyptian and Native American spirituality. Through Wisdom, these traditions share some similarities at the roots. This CD is dedicated to those similarities.
If we can discover what have in common with one another, rather than letting our differences divide us, we can work towards peace in our world. So this is what I’ve tried to do with this CD, create some common ground for people who have traditionally become divided.
I adapted three of Rumi’s poems to song in “The Field,” “This Love,” and the title track, “Kiss the Ground.”
Some of my own poetic interpretations appear of texts such as Job and Ecclesiastes in “Still” and “Any Old Day Now.” And there is much more to explore, such as “A Dispute Between a Man and His Soul,” a text translated from Egyptian hieroglyphics from over 3000 years ago. “Tending Angels” tells the story of my encounters with people who struggle with homelessness while I was the senior pastor at an urban church in Nashville.
I am always honored to work with some of Nashville’s most amazing musicians, composers, songwriters, audio engineers and producers that I also call friends.
This CD was funded by a grant from the Lousiville Institute to explore creative ways in which the collective wisdom of various religious and spiritual traditions, might provide pathways to peace, love and compassion in our world. . -Sherry
